WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder says he has agreed a rematch against Luis Ortiz.

The news comes despite Anthony Joshua, the IBF, WBO and WBA 'super' heavyweight champion, saying he wanted face-to-face talks with Wilder to ensure a fight is agreed this year.

However, Wilder appears to have other plans, tweeting on Wednesday morning: "To all my fans, I want to announce that Luis Ortiz and I have signed for a rematch, with the date and site to be announced shortly. All my controversial fights must get dealt with ASAP."

Wilder beat Ortiz in their first fight in New York last year, knocking out the Cuban in the 10th round to inflict his only professional defeat.

The American's most recent fight was a first-round destruction of Dominic Breazeale to record the ninth-straight defence of his WBC title.

Joshua fights Andy Ruiz Jr on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Box Office, and his promoter Eddie Hearn had urged him to concentrate on impressing on his US debut before calling out Wilder.

He said: "Do we have to make the Wilder fight? More than anything. Biggest fight in world boxing and one of the biggest heavyweight fights of all time.

"I'm scared of Ruiz Jr and especially of Wilder - he can punch! But don't you want those moments, a chance to be undisputed?

"You think we don't want it? We want it so badly. AJ needs to say: 'Now! November or December, no excuses, let's do it'."

I thought Whyte was mandatory?

Re: Wilder running from Joshua still....
Mandatory means diddly-squat in the world of the WBC.

Wilder earned $2m from his previous fight against Ortiz. He's either very stupid, or he's running scared.

Give me the 70's and 80's when all the big guns traded with each other... the politics in boxing STINKS

Joshua has done his fair share of fucking people but this is pretty shameful stuff from Wilder. Especially as he has a decent chance against the robotic body builder.

People are a bit thick aren't they?

Wilder Joshua and Fury WILL NOT fight for another year or so, Boxing is a business and if those 3 fought now in any order what next? There's no other big fights out there.

Use your brains, kids.

Hopefully Fury/Joshua can organise something in the interim. Won't hold my breath, though.

They are all avoiding each other.

Joshua originally did not want to fight in America. Apparently never saw the 50 million that was offered to him from Wilders team. Even if he saw half that it will be more than what he will be getting to fight this Ruiz bloke.

The fight will happen eventually but not until all parties have milked every other single possibility. The fight is going nowhere and the longer they all wait the more they will end up earning.

boxing is promoter driven and all about the money. It is 90% bullshit but people still point the finger at someone who is apparently 'scared' of fighting the other person. No boxer is scared of fighting another especially with the amount of money that is involved.

Re: Wilder running from Joshua still....
too many snouts in the trough earning good money from mediocre fights, so no need to make the better fights. also, too much power given to the tv companies who now own most sports and cause the conflict of interest when different fighters at signed up to different stations. this fight against ruiz will be a joke, the fat cunt will do well to last four rounds yet they still have the front to make it another pay per view

Calling people THICK and following it up with naming three boxers who won’t fight for another year. Yet 2 of them have already fought!!! Hahahahaha nice one!

Re: Wilder running from Joshua still....
They should have had a rematch straight away, both ducked away from it because the first fight was so good it makes much better business sense to build it up.

You're the idiot for assuming I hadn't realised they'd fought already.

Absolute imbecile, get back to your flying dragons

Keep biting mate.

Boxing, Brexit and Bolty really do not mix well

Re: Wilder running from Joshua still....
You didn't correct me, all you did was assume.

The point stands regards it being a business, getting back to the thread.

If them three fought within the next year regardless if it's a rematch it makes no sense as there's no where else to go after that.

They'll continue to take out the "contenders" who have pretty decent records albeit against shocking opponents to build the hype up.
